The tip uses capillary action to hold ink from an inkwell, allowing for a versatile line quality ranging from fine to broad strokes depending on the angle and pressure applied. These pens are used in calligraphy and sketching, offering a stiff, textural feel and expressive, sometimes sketchy, lines that differ from metal dip pens.
